What To Consider When Renovating Your Bathroom

A bathroom remodel can be a daunting project to take on, especially when you’re not sure what you want your new bathroom to look like! There are many things to consider as you want your bathroom to not only meet your needs but also be comfortable and work well with your daily routine. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking to remodel your bathroom.

1. The Overall Plan

Think about the things you want for your bathroom before you schedule a consultation with a remodelling contractor and interior designer. What fixtures and finishes would you like to use? Are you looking for a classic style or something a little more contemporary? How big of a budget do you have? Have you considered a contingency budget within the overall budget? The budget you set must include a little extra to cover unexpected expenses while the project is ongoing.

Another thing you must consider is the type of bathroom you’re looking to create. Will it be a family bathroom? An en-suite bathroom connected to the master bedroom? A guest bedroom? Do you want a full-bath or half-bath? The type of bathroom you want will influence the floor plan, the materials, the budget, and much more. For inspiration, we recommend browsing through Pinterest, looking at home magazines, or searching for images on Houzz just to get some ideas flowing of what you like.

2. Plumbing Fixtures

If you keep the plumbing fixtures close to the current plumbing, you will be able to save a considerable amount of money on renovation and demolition. However, if there’s any damage in the wiring and plumbing, your contractor would likely suggest changing the locations of the current fixtures or even installing new ones.

Plumbing fixture technology has improved so much in the last decade that fixtures now include air induction and water sense regulators as unique features to consider. We only use fixtures from Kohler, American Standard, Moen and Grohe (Hans Grohe offers a lifetime warranty on parts and most fixtures) to ensure our high quality standards are maintained.

The best upgrade in plumbing fixtures that you could do would be to install thermostatic valves. Gone are the days when you could flush the toilet and immediately change the temperature of the water when someone was in the shower! Combination units have also been developed where controls for rain heads, hand held shower wands etc all have a central, one system rather than a separate transfer valve for each item.

Then one of the most important decisions is choosing colours for your plumbing fixtures! The latest colour trends include champagne gold, black and chrome. Keep the fixture colours in mind when choosing lighting options too as sometimes the design for the space needs matching colours.

3. The Floor Plan

While changing the floor plan of the current bathroom layout is an option, it might not always be simple or possible. Think about how you use the space currently. What bothers you? What do you use the most? Do you need more storage? Would you replace a bathtub with a shower or vice versa? If you plan on keeping the fixtures in the same spots, this will create an easier project as the plumbing and space will stay relatively the same. However, if you would like to change the floorplan of the bathroom, this may introduce extra costs for reorganizing the plumbing, removing current tile installation or having to install new plumbing all together.

4. Lighting

Lighting is an important part of the bathroom. After all, you need to be able to see as you go about your daily routine. Consider adding some ambient light as it can improve the look of your bathroom considerably while ensuring that it is functional.

Adding LED flush pot lights are useful to allow light to reach farther than a traditional can pot light system. Using LED lights gives you substantial savings on hydro bills and adds considerable more light to the space. Having warm daylight lighting with a recommended dimmer switch allows you to control the dramatic light difference throughout the day and evening. The LED lights or even Edison bulbs are great options when choosing vanity lighting. Wall sconces and clear glass fixtures add a wonderful old world or modern industrial look. However, it is important to consider the additional maintenance that clear glass requires as cleaning the glass could be difficult depending on how easy it is to remove the fixture.

Using the next trend colours and latest technology together is a way to add interest and light to any space. Light fixtures can be the wow factor that takes a bathroom from good to great! The latest trend colours such as champagne gold, black or chrome are added often now to match plumbing fixtures but you could go with an interesting, unique feature that doesn’t match that adds to the wow factor of the space as well.

Lastly, mirrors are useful for opening the space. Don’t get stuck thinking that you only have to use rectangular mirrors, they come in all shapes to match the vanity and overall design of your space. Round, LED lighting inset and metal or wood framed mirrors are used more often now to add interest and function. Keep in mind, when using an LED lit mirror (some even have Bluetooth compatibility), make sure the mirror is onsite when electrical is ready for the rough in and planning. Specifications online can be misleading and if you don’t get the mirror in time to let the electrician plan for it, it could add extra time and money if not correctly placed before drywall, final paint, tile and other installations are complete.

5. Ventilation

During bathroom remodelling, homeowners often overlook proper ventilation. However, this is very important if you want your bathroom renovation to last for many years. Try getting a fan and a timer to improve your overall indoor air quality. Without proper ventilation, it will be easy for mold and mildew to build up, which can ruin the fixtures you’ve installed.

6. Little Details

Getting the details right can make a world of difference in the overall experience you have when you use your bathroom. This could include the accessibility of electrical outlets to what kind of storage you’ll have. It’s also good to think about if you want to include grab bars, where your towel racks will go, or even where and how big your mirror should be. Start by writing down what you like about your current bathroom and the accessibility you have to all your items. Do you want this to change or keep it similar? If you need a little direction, that’s ok too! We’re more than happy to help you figure out where everything should go.

Taking on a bathroom remodelling project isn’t easy in any shape or form. There are many things to consider before you start to tear down your current bathroom, so make sure you thoroughly think about what you want and need first. Plan ahead carefully, especially when it comes to your budget. Create a clear remodelling plan and avoid making changes in the middle of the project; otherwise, the costs may increase past what you have budgeted for.
